DMAC 2017 South Korea, was created as a forum to discuss the developing trends within the Alternative Investment industry globally. If you were unable to attend this year’s conference, you missed some great thought leadership and keynote sessions! We have provided a few highlights below from keynote speakers and thought leaders who shared their professional expertise and perspectives on the global alternatives landscape. Key speakers included:
Mark Yusko, CEO & CIO, Morgan Creek Capital Management
Lee Rand, Partner, Mexico Ventures
Young Man Hwang, Head of Institutional Finance, Dongbu Securities
Morgan Creek Capital Management’s founder, CEO, & CIO, Mark Yusko, was the keynote speaker for DMAC 2017 South Korea, and focused his presentation on the evolution and opportunities of emerging markets. With a session titled, “Global Search for Alpha: All Roads Lead to Emerging Markets,” Mark Yusko set the stage for the audience to understand the key indicators pointing to the continued importance of emerging markets, along with the growing importance alternatives, such as Private Equity investments, play in a diversified portfolio. Mark Yusko emphasized that with such a challenging environment globally, the need for an alpha focused approach is a priority.
Lee Rand, Partner of Mexico Ventures, shared perspectives on investment in emerging markets through Latin America, and how this is an opportunity that should not be ignored, particularly by investors in Asia, and especially in South Korea. Lee Rand’s presentation titled, “Mexico: Gateway to Spanish Speaker Markets in the Americas,” used Mexico’s attractive macro-economic environment to demonstrate the attractiveness of this market and the strategic importance it plays as a component in the larger global opportunity present in predominantly Spanish speaking markets.
Head of Institutional Finance at Dongbu Securities, Mr. Young Man Hwang, provided conference attendees with a refreshing and relatable perspective from a local South Korean financial services and investment company. Mr. Hwang’s presentation was titled, “Korea’s Alternative Investment Market & Challenges,” which helped to solidify the opportunities and challenges present when working within the finance industry in South Korea. The presentation provided a glance into the continuous growth of the alternative investment industry in South Korea and showcased the continuous growth in allocations year-over-year for key local Pension Funds, Sovereign Funds, Credit Union, and Mutual Aid Associations.
BlackRock was a key speaker at DMAC 2017 and showcased the company’s thought leadership through a presentation that was dedicated to Infrastructure Debt investing. BlackRock was represented by Eric Wu, the Director of BlackRock’s Asia Infrastructure Debt business, who provided a deep dive into the Infrastructure Debt market, the opportunities and risks this provides for investors, and perspectives on how to take advantage of this asset class. As many investors explore their interest in infrastructure debt investing, they are driven primarily by the potential for attractive risk adjusted returns vs. similarly rated corporate credit, and by their interest in diversification and de-risking. However, as Eric Wu cautions, investors still need to consider the risk return profile, market access, and fiduciary model, as key deciding factors when pursuing Infrastructure debt investments.
Thanks again to our keynote speakers and speaker participants. We look forward to sharing details about DMAC 2018 in the coming months!
